walking to work

the last day of january always finds me in a contemplative mood. about this time, the new year starts to feel not so new. january is my birthday month and i always get excited come late december because it feels like everyone is celebrating what a new year means to them and that importance for me always seems to allocate a bit of itself to my birthday as if by proxy.

this morning's walk to work, i found myself taking a different route down polk street. as i passed our gorgeous city hall and started to cut over to grove street, it began to drizzle. the light was perfectly diffused when i walked by the lush oasis pictured above, an empty lot nestled between buildings that i've passed and admired countless times. it is always so shocking and kind of bittersweet to see such rampant vegetation squatting in a stark urban environment. i was listening to sweet thing by my man van, and it was a singular moment, i'm telling you.

about last night

last night's book club was really fun! about a dozen bibliophiles gathered together snuggly in tommy's studio and we all had a rousing dialogue regarding carver's original text v. his editor's final cut. needless to say, the cupcakes were a hit. tommy was also thoughtful to serve gin & tonics, the drink copiously consumed by the characters in our chosen story. everyone in the group was so wonderfully intelligent and witty, jen and i are excited to attend regularly.

book club

i have just under an hour to read raymond carver's what we talk about when we talk about love-- both the rough and final drafts! feels like i'm in college again. jen and i are crashing tommy thornhill's book club tonight, and i'm hoping to ply him with a box of day-old cupcakes from citizen cake. no photos, no time. i'll regret not posting a photo of the cupcakes later, i'm sure.

where shall i hang them?

the prints i ordered last week from berkley illustration arrived today! i discovered this series on the treasure trove that is design*sponge, and if dandified animal portraits are your thing then rejoice, for three new animals will be added to the collection each month. my favorite is the frog who i guess reminds me of kermit, the paramour of my childhood idol.

haves, have nots

finally back home after a long day. i stopped by anthropologie after work to return a glass i'd ordered online (arrived completely smashed to bits). the gal at the register was so sweet and helpful! had a looksee around the store to see what i might exchange for it and spotted many many darling things i now must have. is it wrong to covet $20 wall hooks? the look on nathan's face tells me "yes." ahh, but we've had such nice luck with expensive hardware from anthro as evidenced above.

in about 20 minutes, the marinating jerk chicken in the fridge will be ready to cook up. if i can't satiate my need for retail therapy, then at least my tummy will soon be full.

good morning, good night

hello hello! today was another grey one here in
san francisco. nathan judas and i got up early to run errands with a zipcar, and for all our zipping around town we were still able to make the matinee for no country for old men at the lumiere!

i made coppa & cheddar paninis for lunch and watched some old batman cartoons. trying to whittle down my expansive shoe collection before bed (shoebox, remember?)

what did you do today?
